The board that licenses medical doctors (MDs) decided that health coaching is so important to the health of Americans that they also certify health coaches. They are working towards getting the cost of health coaching reimbursed by health insurance, and coaches need to be NBC-HWC certified in order to bill insurance, as a first step. The exam was 4 hours and covered coaching structure, the coaching process, health & wellness, and legal (HIPAA) & ethics.
I studied about 6 months and took 2 prep courses: 1 through Elevating Science (4 months) and the other through WellCoaches (1 week). Material from around a dozen books on coaching was included on the exam, with these 3 covering coaching structure and the coaching process (I recommend these for anyone who wants to improve their coaching skills):
– Changing to Thrive by James Prochaska & Janice Prochaska (using the stages of change to overcome the top threats to health and happiness)
– Motivational Interviewing by William Miller & Stephen Rollnick (using motivational interviewing as a powerful approach to facilitating change)
– Coaching Psychology Manual by Margaret Moore, Erika Jackson & Bob Tschannen-Moran (examines the theories involved in successful coaching and provides a theory-based approach to all aspects of health and wellness coaching)
Of all the coaching training I’ve taken, this process by far made me a better coach.
I don’t see a way to attach my certificate, so I’ll email it – sorry, I forgot when I originally submitted this request.
Hi Brenda! Can you share a little more about what this certification involves as well as your certificate of completion? Thank you!
